Persuasive essay topics for college students

When working on a persuasive essay, students often choose a topic that they believe in deeply. In the excitement of choosing a topic, they choose something that they care about deeply and use the persuasive paper as an opportunity for a little evangelism.

Those same students are often surprised at the subsequent poor grade because they believe that they have thought a great deal about the subject and that it must show in their paper. What we all often fail to realize in these instances is that we have thought a lot about our own opinion, but not done very much learning of the facts.

We are encouraged to think of people who disagree with us as not informed or as dishonest. A better start to persuasive paper is to think of the opposition as a beloved friend or a respected elder. This will help us avoid a silly one-sided paper that receives a poor grade.

What does this have to do with persuasive essay topics for college students? One way to avoid these pitfalls is to choose a topic you are not completely passionate about. When selecting a topic, think about things that you are interested in, but are not necessarily too close to your heart.

Your interests and hobbies are a good source of possible topics, but it is better for less experienced writers to not choose subjects about which they are highly emotional. It’s perfectly good and OK to talk and write about what matters to you. However, it is important to remember that school is a professional setting.

As your writing improves, so will your ability to tackle sensitive subjects in professional settings. In the meantime, you will probably develop your research and writing skills better with less emotional subjects.
