Case Studies and Simulations
As academia increasingly turns its attention to practical knowledge of all sorts, the case study becomes more and more prevalent. Once mostly restricted to the Business world, case studies now show up in Nursing, Engineering, Economics, Finance, Aviation, Psychology, and many other disciplines. Their primary purpose is to use written materials to evaluate the ability of the student to engage in a real-life experience.
Related to case studies are simulations which quite often employ a multi-media approach to assess students' abilities to learn from, analyze, and work with realistic situations. Case studies and simulations are actually quite similar -- and they both differ from term papers and research papers in several important ways.
First, while all papers are unique in their own way, all case studies start with a common scenario from which the same basic facts need to be drawn. Second, while every student might take a different approach to the same basic term paper topic, this is not true for case studies: all students are required to answer the same general questions about the scenario. Finally, while independent, critical thought is applauded when it comes to term papers and research projects, instructors don't give much latitude when it comes to case study assignments: they need to know that students can draw certain key, identical insights from what they read.
What can make case studies particularly difficult for college students is that they don't generally show up in high school. Therefore, students don't know the format, nor are they given a chance to learn it; instead, they're thrown into unfamiliar territory, too often without any sort of lifeline. Even more intimidating is the reality is that case studies are much harder to write than they seem at first glance.
An effective case study assignment will incorporate the right balance of summary and analysis. By this, we mean that the student first needs to show an adequate understanding of the case itself: who are the major players, what are the major concerns, and what strengths and weaknesses present themselves. Next, the student needs to show the ability to learn from the present so as to project into the future, and this requires an astute analysis of how the elements of the case work together now so as to predict how they might work together later. Finally, the student needs to demonstrate the ability to affect the outcome of the case by again using the existing elements, analyzing their current and future place in the scheme of things, and deciding the best way to facilitate positive change.
