Information Technology and Computer Science Projects
Imagine the United States after the 1930's, when the automobile really came into wide use. Along with all of the other effects upon the country, one of the most impactful changes was the explosion of jobs related to the new range of gasoline-powered vehicles being produced. First, of course, there were manufacturing-sector jobs, which dealt with making parts and putting those parts together into cars and trucks. Next came all sorts of peripheral jobs which were nevertheless brought into being by the automotive industry, including road-building, highway-planning, and other related careers. And we cannot forget the mechanics, whose value to the average driver was virtually immeasurable.
Well, major job creation is also one thing the advent of the Information Age has done for the 21st century. Computers are today's automobiles, meaning that an entire sector of jobs and careers has been created by the increased use of both personal and mainframe computers, as well as the extreme growth of the Internet. Just as large numbers of young people entered the factories and mechanics training schools in the middle part of the 20th century, now, increasingly, students are turning to the general areas of information technology and computer science.
The primary difference between computer and IT-related jobs and automobile-related jobs is sheer variety. There are literally thousands of careers in computer science and information technology, ranging from designing video games to repairing hard drives for personal computers; from working as a consultant to small businesses who need to set up networks to designing whole systems for major corporations. Moreover, folks are discovering new niche careers every single day, for the world of computers and the Internet is still so new that we have yet to scratch the surface.
It makes complete sense for almost anyone to enter this exciting field, or, we should say, range of related fields. But unless a given individual is a maverick, a natural entrepreneur a la Bill Gates or Steve Jobs, s/he needs to go to college and obtain at least a Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology and/or Computer Science. That is, of course, always easier said than done. These degrees are difficult by nature, at least two years in the making, and require a considerable investment of time.
It can be particularly difficult for those students who truly have the gift of working with computers, because they have to sit through classes that might feel like elementary school knowledge to them. On the other hand, students who want to learn this specialized knowledge but who are just beginners might feel completely lost in the same class.
