Executive Summaries
An executive summary is to the world of business what an abstract is to the world of academia. In other words, the executive summary is used in conjunction with business documents the way abstracts are used with academic documents: to tell the reader what is contained within the said document such that if s/he does not have the time or the inclination to read the whole thing, s/he will have a pretty good sense of it in any case.
However, this rather simplistic explanation does not do justice to this particular form of writing. Executive summaries not only recount the high points of a particular business plan, white paper, or marketing report. They also convey an appropriate sense of excitement and interest to the reader; appropriate, that is, for the particular document. This is especially important when executive summaries are used for business plans. Investors in particular do not have the time to read countless business plans, but they do read the summaries. A well-written summary will encapsulate the heart and soul of the business plan, in addition to simply regurgitating what it contains.
In fact, many guides to writing good executive summaries describe them not as summaries, but instead as sales pitches, complete with “grab” lines, the problem to be solved, and how the following document explains how that problem will be solved (and of course, how it will be solved better by the author of the document than by anyone else). The trick, though, is that the executive summary must read as if it is, in fact, a neutral piece of writing, simply stating what is contained within its accompanying document.
This mixture of surface-level neutrality and underlying persuasion is what makes the executive summary both so effective, and so difficult to write well. Unfortunately, most colleges and universities do not do justice in their curricula to this genre, and present it almost as an after-thought. “Write an executive summary for your business plan,” an assignment might direct, with precious little instruction, let alone examples.
