A KAM is a "Knowledge Area Module," and was both invented by, and is used by, Walden University, an online university strictly dedicated to distance learning. The KAM is intended to introduce PhD  students in some programs not only to their fields of study, but also to their eventual dissertation topics, by including three primary parts: Breadth, Depth, and Application. Students in these programs are expected to write a total of six KAMs which lead them up to their dissertations. This might sound intimidating, and it is to many students, but it is important to remember that the KAM sequence replaces traditional coursework. In this way, Walden offers a non-traditional spin on what is already a non-traditional approach to education; that is, distance learning.

Before any given KAM can be written, a Learning Agreement (LA) must be created and approved by identified faculty members. The LA is like a proposal for a thesis or dissertation; it basically lays out the course of study which the student wants to pursue in his or her KAM. Once the LA is approved, work on the KAM begins.

The first step is to write what is called the Breadth Demonstration. It gives a broad overview of the general area to be studied, rather like a wide-ranging literature review. The Depth Demonstration is next, and this is when students narrow their focus, taking into account all of the massive research done for the Breadth Demonstration and honing it down to fit the parameters of their Learning Agreement. Finally, the Application Demonstration shows that the student can take already-conducted research and apply it in an original fashion, again as per the parameters of the Learning Agreement.

The key goals in the LA and KAM process are for students to learn to seek and find a wide array of scholarly materials; engage with those materials in an intensive fashion; and see how that knowledge might be both applied and advanced in their own work. Needless to say, this process is incredibly rigorous, more so in many ways than traditional PhD-level coursework. Given the responsibilities of family, work, and everything else, many students have trouble meeting the demands of the KAMs, especially in the beginning when the whole journey is so new and intimidating.
