Letters of Intent

In terms of substance and form, the letter of intent is very similar to the application essay. However, letters of intent differ in that they are typically written by students wishing to gain entrance into graduate school, as opposed to a four-year college or university. Thus, the pressure is even greater to ensure that the quality of writing is exceptional, and that the instructions provided by the institution are followed to the tee.

Unfortunately, there is not always a lot of guidance provided to applicants beyond the actual prompt. Some schools don't even give a word count to follow. This leaves so much open to interpretation that many students feel lost; worse, they make decisions about how to write their letters of intent that are based upon their own existing knowledge, which means that the decisions are not always the right ones.

One of the best pieces of advice to an applicant wishing to write an excellent letter of intent is to consult with a faculty member who teaches in the department s/he wishes to join. Most faculty members are delighted to give their two cents' worth and are happy to give an inside view as to what the admissions committee is looking for. In fact, it might be a good idea to ask a few professors for their ideas about the general structure, length, and content of a successful letter of intent; the more consistent the replies, the more the applicant can be sure that the advice is sound.

Another smart idea when writing a letter of intent is to read as many examples as possible. Googling the term “letter of intent” leads to countless sample letters, at least some of which will bear enough resemblance to what is necessary in order to provide some guidance to the applicant. Once enough letters are reviewed, the applicant will get a pretty good sense of the kinds of notes to jot down about him or herself, notes which can be translated into the letter itself.

Speaking of which, at some point the applicant needs to sit down with his or her transcripts, resume/CV, and notes, as well as all relevant school materials, and write a draft letter. This letter should only be the first of many, as many drafts will be needed to create the kind of perfect letter necessary to gain admittance into graduate school.
