Master's Theses

There is actually no such thing as "the" Master's Thesis. Depending upon one's course of study, one's particular university, and even the country in which the university is located, the Master's Thesis will assume a variety of forms. Some schools require students to defend their Master's Thesis in front of several examiners, while others allow the online submission of the text. Some schools demand that master's level students conduct field research, while others allow a meticulous review and analysis of the literature to serve the same purpose.

Regardless of these differences, however, the one thing they all have in common comes down to one word: research. Extensive research must be conducted to come up with a viable thesis statement and research questions. Then, even more research must be conducted  to determine what other work has been done in the field already, specific to the thesis statement and particular hypotheses. Finally, yet more research must be conducted to investigate the said hypotheses.

This is true regardless of the field of study; from African History to Computer Science, all graduate students must go through this process if they wish to receive their master's degrees.

It is not uncommon for graduate students to spend hundreds or even thousands of hours locating, reading, and analyzing countless books and articles before they even know exactly what they wish to investigate. Once this step has been accomplished, the next stage is to synthesize all of this knowledge and come up with a viable thesis statement and research questions. This might seem like an easy task, but thesis committees are known to be incredibly exacting, and generally insist upon hypotheses that are highly original, realistically testable, and useful to the field.

Those students fortunate enough to have their thesis and research questions approved must face another daunting task: writing the first three chapters of the thesis. These are the Introduction, the Literature Review, and the Methodology. Anywhere from 25 to 200 pages will be required just for these chapters alone, and not just any writing will do. For the Master's Thesis, concise, sophisticated language is an imperative; the student is considered to be at an advanced level of study, and his or her writing must be commensurate with that.

Finally -- sometimes after years of work -- the student is ready for the final chapters of the thesis: Results, Data Analysis, and Conclusions and Recommendations. Of course, much more work must be done to write these chapters, including data collection, statistical analysis (if the research design is quantitative), and a revisiting of the original literature review to see just what place these results have in the broader scope of the field. This can take many more months, if not years. And then, of course, it all has to be approved.
