Poetry

Writing a poem is tough. There is no other way to say it. It's hard, and intimidating, and even scary, especially for people who do not consider themselves talented in the poetry department. Staring at that blank screen and trying to think of something beautiful, witty, insightful, or inspiring can very quickly become a demoralizing experience.

However, the bright side of the story is that there are so many different kinds of poems, so many different forms and genres, that anyone can find at least one or two types with which they especially resonate. For example, after reading many kinds of poems, a particular student might feel that she especially relates to confessional poetry, that form pioneered by the likes of Sylvia Plath and Robert Lowell. If assigned the task of writing a poem, this student might well wish to read as many confessional poems as she can within the space of a few days, and then put them away for awhile. The goal is to let the form sort of sink in, gel within the mind and consciousness, so as to be something which feels more approachable in time.

While this gelling process is taking place, the student should also be thinking about a topic or two for her poem. The topic should come from the type of poetry selected. For example, confessional poetry is, by nature, highly intimate. So, choosing to write about the Civil War might not be the best idea. Instead, the student might want to write about a miscarriage she suffered in the past, or her troubled relationship with her father. Again, this topic should be allowed to gel for awhile.

Once some time has passed, the student needs to sit down and face that blank page. It should be easier, though, because there will be a framework inside which she can use to inform her own poem. She will also have allowed herself to really think about all the ramifications of her chosen topic(s) which, in turn, should make the use of figurative language easier. Metaphors, analogies, symbols, vivid descriptions, these and other hallmarks of successful poems should come more freely in the wake of having taken the time to really allow the poetry to form on an unconscious level.

Unfortunately, not all students have this kind of time or the luxury of allowing poetry to gel on a back burner.
