Resumes and CVs
Are you looking for a job in your chosen profession? Depending upon what kind of career you want, you will need either an excellent resume or CV (curriculum vitae). These documents are much more than lists of past jobs, educational degrees, and publications; they represent nothing less than who you are to a potential employer. Today's high-paying, high-status positions typically receive hundreds of applicants. You will have at most a minute to capture the attention of the staff person sorting through endless piles of resumes. You have to make the most of your 60 seconds.
In combination with a solid, engaging cover letter, a well-written resume or CV will set you apart from the crowd of people who are also vying for your position. The key to creating one is to understand the trends of the day while still adhering to a few critical, timeless rules.
First, the timeless rules. Resumes and CVs need to be written in an active voice, avoiding the past tense when at all possible. They need to highlight those aspects of your career (work, volunteer, educational, and other) which are not only specifically applicable to the position in question, but are also complementary to it. You want your future employer to be pleasantly surprised by one or more of your skills, ideally skills s/he never consciously thought about as necessary for the position before reading your impressive list of credentials.
Resumes and CVs also need to be formatted clearly and consistently. Key words need to jump out at the person reading them without being too obtrusive. Needless to say, these critical documents must written with impeccable grammar, punctuation, spelling, and word usage.
Again, though, times change. In the past, employers would refuse to consider resumes over one page in length; in fact, job-seekers were explicitly told that whatever they put on a second page would end up in the garbage, sight unseen. However, these days, especially given the increasing popularity of submitting resumes and CVs online, employers are more willing to read through a second, and sometimes a third, page. It all depends upon the specific job for which one is applying, as well as one's unique work and academic track record.
It also used to be the case that the resume or CV would simply list one's past experiences, while the cover letter would go into greater detail about those experiences and how they made the job-seeker the perfect candidate. Today, however, the resume or CV itself is expected to explain how particular entries represent unique strengths for the position in question.
