Speeches

The speech assignment is one that swings wildly in the minds of students, ranging from totally afraid and panicked to completely mellow and unworried. These reactions are due to one thing, and one thing only: how a student feels about getting up in front of his or her peers and talking. Given that most students will admit to feeling very shy about doing just this, it is no wonder that speech assignments tend to engender a lot of anxiety.

The first key to mastering the speech is to remember that there are many kinds of speeches, which can help, in turn, to understand the whole reason for giving speeches in the first place. In the beginning, language was orally transmitted; the written word is far newer on the scene than talking. Keeping that in mind, it is easy to see that the speech is actually a more natural way to communicate with other people than, say, the essay. Perhaps the passage of time has made giving speeches more nerve-wracking than writing essays, but again, this is how people originally communicated when they needed to get a message out to more than one or two people.

The speech-as-message concept helps explain the many kinds of speeches that exist. There are persuasive speeches, informative speeches, inspirational speeches, eulogies, lectures, and many other forms. Depending upon the type of the speech, as well as the length of the speech, the speaker will need to gear his or her words accordingly.

Despite the type of speech one is giving, there are certain rules that should be followed which help structure the speech. All speeches should begin with what is called a “hook,” which is a jargony term for getting the attention of the audience. The hook can be a joke, or it can be a disturbing anecdote, or any one of a number of other attention-getters. The one thing it should always be, though, is original and fresh.

From the hook, the student giving the speech should lay out the context and purpose of the speech. This should not be done in a literal and boring form, but instead in a creative fashion, so that the audience is set up to hear what the student wants to say. It is important to be especially careful with this part of the speech, as everything you say from this point forth will be cast in the light of this initial set-up.

The rest of any given speech will differ a bit based upon its purpose, but there do exist some set guidelines and forms which can help students determine the best way to write the particular speech as well as the proper number of words to write in order to achieve the predetermined length.
