Good topics for research papers.

Generally speaking, a good topic for a research paper is one that you are interested in and has enough good resources to explore your topic. For most students, though, it is a lot more complicated because of various requirements from the professor or teacher.

Usually if someone is struggling to choose a topic, it is because of

• anxiety

• uncertainty

• disinterest

Anxiety can be rooted in immediate concerns involving the paper or class, or it can be the result of underlying mental illness. We aren’t mental health professionals, but we can help you address the practical issues related to studying. Get enough sleep, eat nutritious food, and create a schedule for yourself that includes 5-minute breaks every 20 to 40 minutes. Step away from the computer, stretch your neck and shoulders, drink a glass of water, anything to shake out the accumulating tension.

Uncertainty is often present when a student has not understood the subject or lectures very well. It can be difficult to choose a topic when you are expected to use your research paper to develop some specialization, but you really need to work on the basics. Talk to your professor. Let them know that you are struggling and ask them for suggestions about what materials would be helpful for you to read and include in your essay.

Disinterest is usually the case when a student is taking a required course or when a class or professor is turning out to be a lot less interesting than they expected. Take some time to search your library’s databases for the required subject AND an area of interest to you. For example, perhaps you have found your 18th century American history class boring, but have an avid interest in botany. Perhaps you could do research into the native plant species that became extinct in the 18th century due to invasive European species!
