I need help with a problem solution essay.

Sometimes referred to as a Problem and Solution Essay, many students love to write this type of paper but are disappointed in the grades they receive. If you have never written a problem solution essay, this PDF from a community college writing center can be useful.

Once you have absorbed the concepts there or are trying to improve your writing, this post should be helpful. Here we are going to talk about some of the common mistakes students make in their problem solving essays:

  • selecting too big of a problem, or too many problems

  • choosing a solution that does not solve the stated problem or is impossible

  • ignoring or minimizing the drawbacks of their chosen solution

If you have been assigned a three-page paper and you choose to try solve a problem like unwanted pregnancies, you have a problem to large and complex for your paper. If you think that doing X will solve this problem 100%, then you are oversimplifying the problem. You won’t end war or famine in three pages, either. Instead, choose one aspect of the problem, like access to birth control for teens in rural areas, and explain it well.

To stick with the same example of unwanted pregnancies, you may say that ‘family’ or ‘prayer’ are the solution. This ignores that people already have families, that their families may be the problem and can’t be switched out, or that people who pray can still get pregnant even if they do not want to be. Neither family nor prayer are wrong or bad, but they do not address the problem.

If your solution to unwanted pregnancies is to ban sex before marriage, this is impossible for one and has incredible drawbacks for two. Some unwanted pregnancies happen to married people, so your solution doesn’t help them. Two, it’s impossible to stop people from having sex; it’s been tried lots of times, it fails. This proposal would be expensive, require policing, punishments, forces marriages, and much more. You can’t just ignore those things or their drawbacks by saying that if everyone freely chose the exact same thing, it would be perfect. “Stop fighting” is also a perfect solution to war, but it’s been suggested before and people continue to ignore it, it won’t work just because you are suggesting it.

This is just one example and you might not be able to see why your own solution to your own problem doesn’t work. Feel free to ask here, be specific, and anon is on.
