I’m trying to choose between research paper topic ideas.

Without knowing a bit more about the ideas and you, we can only give general advice, but we’re happy to do that!

First, without thinking about the paper itself, think about the class or the subject and answer a few questions. This is a great way to think up research paper topic ideas

  • What have I liked most about this class?
  • What have I liked least about this class?
  • What do I understand best from the class?
  • What do I understand least from the class?

You don’t have to list only one thing for each; it can be a couple of things. If your grader has given you questions to choose from, you can ask the same questions. Which of these do I like the most, dislike the most, understand the best, and understand the least.

Why would you want to write about the one you didn’t understand? There are several reasons:

  • If you didn’t understand it, then you need to do more studying. Writing a paper is a great way to do more reading and thinking about a subject that confuses you.
  • Sometimes we think that we didn’t understand something because we aren’t capable of understanding. That thought with can mess with our confidence, which will then make it harder for us to perform. Kick that thought to the curb by spending some time learning about something you struggled with at first.

Writing about things you don’t understand very well is a great conversation starter with your professors and teachers. Let them know that you are going to write about something you are learning about and ask them to think about that when they are grading your paper. It can make a huge difference.
