Now is the Time to Get a Handle on your Classes!

If you are like tens of thousands of other college students, you went back to (or started) school yesterday. Because yesterday was a Monday, that means that you probably received at least three, possibly more, syllabi for new classes. Although your professors undoubtedly went over the course requirements in class, chances are the repetition and the novelty combined were too much for you to remember everything.

Thus, ideally you went over all of the syllabi later, when you had some peace and quiet and could focus upon then. If not, the best thing for you to do right now is to sit down with paper and a pen, take out your syllabi, and start the review process.

Read through the first syllabus, and as you do, start and continue a running list of all assignments you will be expected to hand in. Do this chronologically! Do not group by type of assignment (e.g. discussion questions, term papers, and so forth), as you will undoubtedly lose track of something. Next to each assignment, write your estimate as to how long it will take you to complete it.

Do this for all of your classes, including those you will have taken today for the first time. Once you have a sheet of paper listing the assignments for each class, then make a master list. Again, do it in chronological order so that you know in any given week (or on any given day) exactly what you will have to hand in, and to whom.

After you have done this, your tendency might be to panic. Do not panic! Simply assess your total estimated time, multiply by, say, 1.5 to get the real number of hours everything will take, and then consider realistically speaking how many hours you will actually have to spend. If your number of available hours is less than the number of hours you will need to complete your projects, then it's time to call for help. Right now. Do not wait.
