What should I write my college essay about?

Uh oh! That is a really broad question. So broad that I can’t really answer it for you, but I think that I can help you answer for yourself.

First, open a document or get a pen and paper, because you are going to make an outline. Now, what class is this for? Be specific. Don’t just write “English” or “Business”, write out the department, number, and full course name: “English 125: Literature of the World”. Do this so that you are thinking in big ways rather just “my lit class”.

Think about whether there was a reading, lecture, or subject that you liked or even really hated. Was there something you read and you had to complain to your study partner, roommate, or Twitter? Was there something, even a single line, that really stuck with you? That’s your topic.

Can you write a paper about a single line? Yes, you can! Study the line, read it aloud, think about what it means to you and about whether it might mean different things to different people. Once you feel like you know the line, start filling out the outline for introduction of your paper. You may even feel ready to write parts, or even all, of the introduction.

For the body of the paper, think about the line and your introduction. Now start at the beginning of the rest of the article or story, and think about how your topic relates to various points in the rest of the book. Fill in your outline as you go, including as much information as you possibly can, including entering page numbers so that your citations will be easy.
