Knowing politicians' platforms and intentions is important, but in order to do that you need to be able distinguish good information from bad information, just like you do as a student.

People often struggle with sensitive topics. In executing their papers, they often portray those who disagree with them as not only wrong, but also dishonest or insincere. In this example, we will use homophobia as a topic, in order to be specific and have the topic make sense.

Don’t save references for last.

Many students save references for last. When working as a writing tutor I noticed that the same students would appear repeatedly with the same problem, a mass of notes and highlights with a list of references and a desperate need to help assembling a proper bibliography and related citations.

Tips for a comparative essay (aka a comparison essay.)

One simple mistake that younger writers make when writing a comparison essay is choosing something they like and comparing it to something they dislike. This often seems like a good idea because it is so much fun to think about something you really enjoy and to pick on something that you don’t like. Unfortunately, that usually makes for thoughtlessness and oversimplification.
